Overview of How to Install Apps on Mac from a DMG File

Many Mac apps are delivered as DMG disk images. Installing them takes only a minute.

Step 1: Open the DMG

Double-click the downloaded .dmg file in your Downloads folder to mount it.

Step 2: Drag to Applications

In the window that opens, drag the app icon onto the Applications folder shortcut.

Step 3: Eject the disk image

Right-click the mounted disk on the desktop or in Finder and choose Eject.

Step 4: Open the app

Launch the app from Applications. If macOS warns about an unidentified developer, open System Settings, Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway only if you trust the source.
